Baader Meinhof Complex, The
March 20, 2010
|
IMDB rating: 7.40 Plot: Germany in the 1970s: Murderous bomb attacks, the threat of terrorism and the fear of the enemy inside are rocking the very foundations of the yet fragile German democracy. The radicalised children of the Nazi generation lead by Andreas Baader, Ulrike Meinhof and Gudrun Ensslin are fighting a violent war against what they perceive as the new face of fascism: American imperialism supported by the German establishment, many of whom have a Nazi past. Their aim is to create a more human society but by employing inhuman means they not only spread terror and bloodshed, they also lose their own humanity. The man who understands them is also their hunter: the head of the German police force Horst Herold. And while he succeeds in his relentless pursuit of the young terrorists, he knows he’s only dealing with the tip of the iceberg. |

When will the German film "The Baader Meinhof Complex" be released in the United States?
thanks
I would go to the film’s website and look for the release schedule. It is playing in the San Francisco area right now. It probably won’t go into wide release. If you live in or near a large city then it will probably come to your area soon.

Quantum Mechanics and Reality?
I am struggling with finding the appropriate answer to a few questions. I am not a scientist or a philospher, so I need some help please.
1. Quantum Field Theory - would it convey reality as a manifest of a network of interactions and relations OR a composition of subatomic particles. I would think that it’s the interactions, but it could be both imo.
2. Would Quantum Mechanics be an ex of Pragmatism or Materialism? I think Pragmatism, but then again materialism deals with matter and it’s motion.
3. Golden Ratio - is there evidence of the Golden Ratio? I know that "The Last Supper" and the Egyptian pyramids are examples that some use to say there is evidence. But are these just theories?
Thanks. I have been going over these questions and I just can’t seem to narrow the answers down.
Any help, info, suggestions appreciated. Thanks.
I should have said in reference to the Golden Ratio "is there any evidence to support that it is true?". These are just a few of many questions in my Philosophy class and I can see how, in especially #’s 1 & 2 , they could go either way. But unfortunately I have to give 1 answer and I am stuck.
1. QFT deals with reality ("conveys" it) as BOTH a series of interactions AND as particles — the interactions are between particles. In this sense it is no different than Maxwell’s equations and classical electrodynamics. However, it is the quantization of allowed energies which sets QFT apart from more classical field theories.
2. Depends on what you define as "pragmatism", actually. QM is fantastically accurate, and agrees so well with experiments that one could easily define it as "materialist". It seems to me that there is a false dichotomy in insisting that "pragmatism" and "materialism" are necessarily distinct and the only two possibilities.
3. If you prefer to think of the golden ratio as the limiting case of the ratio of the terms in the Fibonacci series, then it most certainly DOES exist. There’s also quite recent research which SUGGESTs somewhat that 1.618 shows up in various ways: http://esciencenews.com/articles/2010/01 /07/golden.ratio.discovered.a.quantum.wo rld .
There is a way of looking at the golden ratio as being "the most irrational number": http://www.ams.org/featurecolumn/archive /irrational4.html . For some engineering applications, where ratios might lead to resonances which could collapse a structure, building things in the ratio 1:1.618 would lead to the most stability.
========= Edit ==========
"These are just a few of many questions in my Philosophy class and I can see how, in especially #’s 1 & 2 , they could go either way. But unfortunately I have to give 1 answer and I am stuck."
I would have to argue that a philosophy which doesn’t allow any flexibility, nor recognition of shades of gray, is no philosophy at all.

Quantum mechanics is an example of pragmatism, in that we don’t really know what is going on at the subatomic level, HOWEVER our equations are useful in determining the behavior of particles in the real world. I don’t think that you can classify quantum mechanics as materialism, because one of the fundamental principles of physics is that energy and matter are the same thing and can transform from one state to another. Light happens when an electron jumps to a lower energy state and emits a photon, which is matter.
I’m not sure what you mean by "evidence" of the Golden Ratio. In one sense, all numbers except the natural numbers are invented. The existence of 2 is obvious. Animals that have no words or symbols for numbers have a sense of size of quantity and understand that three is more than two. Numbers like e and pi and phi (the Golden Ratio) are invented in the sense that we assigned significance to them, but are real in the sense that they describe real phenomena. For example, the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter would be pi even if there were no sapient creatures present to define it as such.
Similarly, things in nature use the Golden Ratio, or the Fibonacci Sequence, which approaches the Golden Ratio. Nautilus shells are built to this ratio. Leaves in the spiral phyllotaxis (and seed patterns as in sunflowers) grow according to the Fibonacci Sequence. The Golden Ratio is seen when veins branch in both plants and animals.

What songs should I learn on piano?
I’m looking for popular songs that I can play and sing at the same time for a gig.
So far I’ve got:
You Learn by Alanis Morissette
Foolish Games by Jewel
Shadowboxer by Fiona Apple
I was going to give you some right hand notes for Disturbia by Rihanna, Boston by Augustana, Hometown Glory by Adele, and Breathe Me by Sia, but I didn’t know if you’ll get what note rhythms go with it. But if you want them just send a message to me.
I YouTubed most of these except for Hometown Glory and Breathe Me.
If you could get your fingers to do Love Song by Sara Barreilles then I applaud you. It is so difficult.

The Dark Knight sequel: Casting possibilities Part 1?
I know that there have been rumors running around for quite awhile that Sam Worthington is to replace Christian Bale as Batman. Not only do i think that Worthington is a horrible choice to play the Caped Crusader, but i also have a list of other far more qualified people stepping behind the cowl to be the next Dark Knight.
Batman-
Timothy Olyphant- Is a magnificent actor with incredibile range and like Bale has a brooding quality about him. If you see his performance in Hitman, you would see many of the necessary qualities that Christopher Nolan saw in Bale when he watched Equilibrium.
Brendan Fraser- I know he’s getting up there in age and he’s put quite a few donuts away, but that can all be helped with a trainer. Fraser is an actor who might not seem like the ideal choice, but he could make a very convincing Bruce Wayne, and who knows, maybe he just might fill out the batsuit nicely.
Hugh Jackman- The guy is always in amazing shape, he has the look of a little bit older batman, and he’s done an amazing job as Wolverine. If anything, he should be given a shot.
Colin Farrell- Like Bale, he does hale from Europe and has worked plenty of different characters. He’s a bit underrated due to some dud movies, but he’s as talented as any actor out there and he would be a great choice.
Josh Duhamel- He’s got the look to be a leading man, and he’s already been part of 2 big Transformers movies, so he knows how to work a summer blockbuster. Batman may just be the part to launch Duhamel to superstardom.
Josh Hartnett- He was one of hollywood’s hottest stars until a few years ago, when a string of bad movies caused his star to fall, but he fits the profile and may just bring a good spin to the part like Val Kilmer did in Batman Forever.
Desmond Harrington- He hasn’t been in a lot of movies you’ve heard of, but he does fit the profile. He would be a good choice as he has a soft spoken voice like what Bale did.
last but not least, Christian Kane- like Bale, Kane is a soft spoken person on screen, but has a good feel for action. Kane could definitely fit the part if he were to cut his hair a bit, but his height might not help him out (then again a body double could help) Kane is a brooder and wouldn’t bring much change to the role. He’s the darkest horse in this race, but in all fairness should at least be given a look.
Now that is my list, if i were to say who would be the favorites, i would have to say Olyphant, Duhamel, and Farrell are the front runners, but all the candidates listed could succeed in the role.
Please feel free to let me know what you think.
Bale is coming back. no batman without bale

Can someone help me find an indoor adventure facility in Pennsylvania?
This is a very random question but I’m not having any luck finding information. I live in north eastern Pennsylvania and would be willing to traveling a bit. I’m looking for an adventure/fun zone for my boyfriend and I to have a play date.
Activities like sumo fighting; rock climbing; tightrope walking; knocking opponents off of a platform…. etc. We are adults so would be looking for something geared for all ages in mind.
If anyone watched Jon and Kate + 8 there was an episode where Jon took one of the older girls to a place kind of like this…
I appreciate any help in finding a place like this. Thanks!

Help me, please?!? My fiance lost his mother a while ago, and last night he had a set back…?!?!?
Ok, well, I’m 22, and fiance, Jakob, who’s 23, just lost his mom right before Christmas. He was really close with his mom… His dad died when he was only 2, so he was raised by only his mother. He’s a bit more on the feminine side because of this, but he’s also able to express his emotions, and understand mine, better than any other guy I’ve met, which I love. Anyways, he doesn’t even have ANY other extended family, or siblings, either… I’m the only one he has in his life, now, so I’ve really tried to be there for him. He’s gotten very clingy since he lost his mom. Don’t get me wrong, I’m totally fine with it, because I understand that he feels alone lately; he’s orphaned, without any other family, so obviously he’s going to be clingy with me…
Well, he’s been starting to smile a little and joke around again, which makes me really happy… but last night, my friend and I were at a dance convention, and I hurt my ankle and my wrist (I landed very unbalanced, and fell on my hand, and my ankle twisted)… she took me to the hospital and it turns out both my wrist and ankle are broken… but this was at almost midnight, and I had told Jakob I’d be home around 10:30. He called my cell phone a bunch of times, but obviously I didn’t know he was calling, and didn’t pick up. They put a cast on both, and I got sent home at almost 4 am. Jakob was awake, and he was freaking out. As soon as I came in, and my friend walked out the door, Jakob had a meltdown. He told me he thought something had happened to me and he might lose me, and have no one. He told me he sat in the living room staring at the wall, trying not to break down the entire night, because he thought he was going to be alone. It took about 45 minutes to get him to completely calm down, and stop crying. After that, he helped me into bed, but laid there awake for a long time (I did too because my ankle was bothering me). I finally got him to fall asleep around 6 am after gently running my fingers through his hair for almost an hour. He woke up at 8:30 am to make me breakfast, and all today, he was practically a zombie. He’s exhausted, his eyes are puffy from crying, and he has dark circles under his eyes. I don’t know what to do… I thought he was on the mend, but I feel like last night set him back a lot… What can I do to help him? What do I say?!
It sounds like he might need to talk to a therapist to work through all of this.
rets2618 | Feb 06, 2010
Grief is a process, it takes time to work through and although things will continue to get better as time goes on, he is in the worst stages of his grief right now. Most people take about 5 years to really work it out.
If you really care you will learn to understand that part of what he feels is a fear of being totally alone, he has said that out loud so he understands that. The way you show that you understand his fear is to do your best to not stress him. You knew that you were going to the hospital, a place people go to die by the way, so you should have taken a moment to call him when you were admitted and then again after the x-rays were read. That way he would know that you were OK and that someone was taking care to ensure that your stayed OK and then once you knew what was wrong you share that with him. It is unlikely that you will have the same sort of thing happen again and sorry to hear about the two breaks, that is just awful, but there will be other occasions when you run behind or plans change. Make sure that as soon as you know that plans are changing or that you are not going to be where he expects you to be that you call him and let him know you will be late. Then strongly suggest that he meet with a grief counselor so that he can work through some of his issues with another person or people who understand what he is going through.
Thea | Feb 06, 2010
Hi,While I think that it’s awesome of you (and lucky for Jakob) that you are so understanding, it’ s probably not going to be enough for you to try and get through such emotional turmoil on your own.Perhaps you could suggest that you both see a counselor together and then help him to talk things out with a professional. He has obviously had a very hard life so far and without the "tools" to handle these past situations he will have a hard time handling even something as small as you coming home late. You were preoccupied with taking care of you and sometimes that ’s going to happen. There is nothing wrong with that.I believe that together with a counselor you will both gain a lot of insight as to what’s going on with him, with you, and your relationship in general.Since you have so much love and such a strong foundation a therapist can only make your relationship stronger. Best of luck to you both.
